REVISING THE BARRISTERS' COURTS FOR WEST WORCESTERSHIRE
(BEFORE W H STONE, ESQ.)
SATURDAY, OCT. 3.

The Learned Barrister, this morning, previous to proceeding with the lists, gave his decision relative to the objection made against the claim of George Grazebrook, Esq. and five other gentlemen, living in the neighbourhood of Stourbridge, and which case had been reserved from Thursday, and the particulars given at length in our last Herald. Mr Stone said that he and his learned brother barrister had given the subject every consideration, and made references to several cases which assumed a similarity. He particularly alluded to a similar charge brought before a Committee of the House of Commons, who were appointed to hear the merits of a petition presented in 1833, against the return of Mr Lefevre, for Petersfield. It appeared that a few years ago, after the death of Geo. IV., a society was established in the above town, called the "Petersfield Improvement Association," and this society purchased a cricket ground, of not more than 4 acres, for which they gave 1000l. and divided it into shares. At the then ensuing election, the holders of these shares voted; as they did also at the election in 1832. In the following session of Parliament, upon the presentation of a petition, the validity of these votes was questioned. Although it was allowed that a circumstance of fraud appeared to distinguish the transaction, it failed to establish a proof of "occasionality," and the roads were held to be good. He had, therefore, in conjunction with Mr Clive, determined upon retaining the names objected to by Messrs. Elgie and Waters. Mr Elgie said that they would bow to the decision, but still they congratulated themselves in having succeeded to expose the transactions.
