PETERSFIELD, Saturday, Dec. 19
12TH HANTS RIFLE PRIZES.— On Friday evening, the 11th instant, the Petersfield subdivision of the I2th Hants Rifle Volunteers sat down, to the number of forty (exclusive of friends), to an excellent cold collation, amply provided by Host Bailey, at the Volunteer Hotel, at 7 o'clock which gave universal satisfaction. The officers present were Captain S. W. Seward (in the chair) and Ensign Soames. Colour-Serjeant Cole occupied the vice-chair. After the removal of the cloth the Chairman proposed "The Queen," which was loyally reaponded to, as well as "The Prince and Princess of Wales, and all the Royal Family." "The Army. Navy, and Volunteers, was given by the Chairman. Serjeant-Instructor Joy returned thanks. Captain Seward's health was given by the Vice-Chairman, which was cheeringly received. The usnal appropriate toasts followe in happy succession, including "The Officers" proposed by the Chairman. Ensign Soames returned thanks for himself and Lieutenant Minty, who was unavoidably absent from ill health. The health of "The Non-commissioned Officers" followed, and was responded to by Colour-Serjeant Cole. Throughout the evening the utmost harmony and good fellowship prevailed, enlivened by some excellent singing, and concluded one amongst the happy gatherings that has taken place since the establishment of the corps. The Captain, in distributing the prizes, delivered some pertinent and well digested remarks, which were most satisfactorily received and cheered.

Serjeant W. Caplin was also presented with the challenge cup, as the winner, after three years’ competition (as well as £5 5s each year), given by Mr. W. Nicholson, M.P., which he now retains.
