PETERSFIELD

TWELFTH HANTS RIFLE VOLUNTEERS. — On Thursday evening last the 12th Hants Rifle Volunteers mustered in the Square for company drill, under Captain F. Conway Gordon, Adjutant of the 2nd Battalion Hants R.V., being the first company drill since the transfer of the corps from the 3rd to the 2nd Battalion. Present — Captain S. W. Seward, comanding, Lieutenant R. G. P. Minty, Quartermaster-Sergeant Bettsworth, Colour-Sergeant Cole, with Sergeants Caplin, Penn, Avery, and Lance-Sergeant W. Carter, Corporals J. Small, G. Edney, J. C. Denham, H. A. Harvey, Lance-Corporal A. Etherington, and 36 privates, including the detachment from Horndean. The weather was anything but encouraging for their journey of eight miles; fortunately it cleared up so as to favour the drilling, and gave them a comfortable return to home quarters. It is but fair to state that out of the total strength of the corps of sixty members there were 48 present at muster, and it may also not be out of place to note that Sergeant Instructor Joy, who joined the corps in September last, had served twenty-one years in the Portsmouth division Royal Marines, Light Infantry, whose breast is decorated with the Crimean medal and three bars, the Turkish and China medals, and also the medal for long service and good conduct. We may, in conclusion, add that the corps is a highly efficient and flourishing state.
