PETERSFIELD, MARCH 22.

PETERSFIELD PETTY SESSIONS, Tuesday.—Present: The Hon. J. J. Carnegie (in the chair), Mr. J. Waddington, and Mr. G. Forbes.

Constables.—This was the day for appointing parish constables, but of the eighteen parishes comprised in the Petty Sessional Division, only five overseers put in an appearance, viz. those of Buriton, East Meon, Empshott, Steep, and Sheet. The other lists had to stand over.

Damaging Wood, &c.—Hannah Pook was charged with damaging underwood and stealing withies. Defendant was adjudged to pay the costs, 7s 6d, damage 1s, and a fine of 6d.

Leaving his Work.—David Hoad was charged by Mr. Edwin Cottrell, of Catherington, with breach of contract in leaving certain work unfinished. It appeared from the evidence of complainant that he hired defendant about the 25th of January to grub some copse wood. The price agreed upon was 7d a rod, but defendant being disatisfied, he afterwards agreed to give him 8d a-rod, and he went on with the work for a time, but left it without notice and in an unfinished state. Defendant had drawn money from time to time. The work had not yet been measured, but he (complainant) did not think any money would be due to defendant.—The Chairman said if there were no wages to abate, the magistrates had no alternative but to send defendant to prison.—Complainant said he would be satisfied if defendant would go back and finish the job in a workmanlike manner. This defendant consented to do, and was merely adjudged to pay the cost of the summons, 3s.
