PETERSFIELD, Oct. 17

ROBBING A CARRIER’S CART.— On Tuesday, the 13th inst. Henry White and William Bryant were brought up for final examination before J. B. Carter, esq. for robbing a carrier’s cart between Petersfield and Portsmouth, on Tuesday, the 7th inst. From the evidence it appeared that on Wednesday, the 8th, the two prisoners were seen by Police-constable 119, George Newman, passing through the town, and not being satisfied with their appearance and manners, he overhauled them, and found in their possession a pair of valuable trowsers. He immediately took them to the station and reported the same to Superintendent Fey, and on being questioned by him they said they bought them in London; but the eye of the Superintendent caught the name of ‟E. Totterdell Portsea,” on the button, which quite convinced him that they had stolen them. A communication took place between Superintendent Fey and Inspector Bone, of Portsea, and it was soon ascertained that the trowsers belonged to W. Myatt, esq. and he was actually informed of the robbery before he knew he had lost his property. The evidence being completed, they were both committed for trial at the next Quarter Sessions at Winchester.
