DISTRICT INTELLIGENCE.

BRITISH SCHOOLS.—On Tuesday the 20th anniversary of the Petersfield British Schools was held at the schoolroom, in College-street. At two o’clock the children of both sexes underwent a most searching examination for two hours, before a large and respectable audience, much to the satisfaction of all present; rendering it evident that an improved system of instruction is continually practised. At five o’clock nearly 200 partook of the cup which cheers but not inebriates, after which a public meeting was held, presided over by A. C. Crowley, Esq., of Alton. The meeting was addressed by several gentlemen during the evening, favourable to popular education, and the report presented was of a must satisfactory kind, stating that the number of scholars on the books is nearly 200, averaging about 150 in daily attendance. The duties of this moot excellent establishment are under the able management of Mr. J. G. Fairbairn.
