12TH HANTS RIFLE VOLUNTEER BALL.—This ball, which had been announced under very distinguished patronage, came off on Thursday evening last at the Dolphin Hotel, and was altogether a most brilliant affair, although the severe domestic afflictions which have visited several families of the aristocracy in our neighbourhood prevented the attendance of many who would otherwise have graced the assembly with their presence. It will be remembered that last year the attendance so far exceeded all expectation, that the assembly-room at the ‟Red Lion” was found scarcely equal to the occasion. To obviate this on the present occasion Mr. Crafts, the spirited proprietor of both establishments, undertook to renovate the ball-room at the ‟Dolphin,” which is much more commodious, but which had hitherto been objectionable from want of easy communication with other parts of the house. This has now been completely remedied, and the arrangements were such as to afford every facility for ensuring the comfort of the visitors. The decorations of the room were exceedingly effective and of a highly appropriate character, and reflected great credit on Mrs. Crafts, under whose personal superintendence the whole was arranged. The refreshment rooms were also replete with every requisite, and fully sustained the long-established reputation of the host and hostess. The following, is a list of the company present so far as we have been able to obtain it :—

VOLUNTEER BALL.—The ball in aid of the funds of the 12th Hants Rifle Corps came off, on Thursday last, at the Dolphin Hotel. The attendance was not so large as last year, but this is easily accounted for by the fact that several families of the aristocracy in the neighborhood have lately been visited with severe domestic affliction, and were thus prevented from giving the ball the eclât of their presence as well as their patronage. The ball room though scarcely so large as that at the Red Lion was very tastefully fitted up, the decorations being very skilfully and successfully carried out by Mr. F. Henson. At the top of the room was an elegant device in pink and white, interspersed with evergreens, with the initials V.R., and surmounted by a broad scroll, bearing the words “12th Hants Rifle Volunteers;” festoons of evergreens also completely surrounded the room. In the alcove, formed by the deep bay window, at the lower end of the room, was a very pretty device, also in pink and white, and on this was displayed the “Silver Battalion Prize Cup,” won by a member of the Corps (Sergeant-Armourer Caplin) at the late contest at Fareham. The orchestra was fitted up to correspond, the centre ornament being the Prince of Wales’s plume. A number of bayonets, rifles, &c., in various designs, gave great effect and brilliance to the scene. The room was brilliantly lighted by three handsome gaseliers, pendant from the ceiling, and a goodly array of wax candles. Too much cannot be said in praise of the arrangements generally, and indeed the good taste and tact which characterise all that Mr. and Mrs. Crafts undertake are too well-known to need comment from us, suffice it to say it was evident no pains had been spared by them to make the whole affair everything that could be desired, and they must feel well repaid by the complete success and the fact that everyone was pleased. The refreshment and supper rooms presented every delicacy, while the lounging and cloak rooms were replete with elegance and comfort. The band on the occasion was furnished by Mr. J. Conduit, of Ryde. We give below as complete a list of the company present as we have been. able to obtain, but as many of the tickets had no name attached we are unable to make it as complete as we would wish.
