THE 12TH HANTS.—A WORD TO THE ABSENTEES.—An inspection of the members of the 12th Hants Volunteers was made by Col. Luard on Friday last, when the men were put through a variety of manœvres by Capt. Chawner and the other officers present. Col. Luard was gratified with the manner in which they accomplished those movements, and complimented both the men and the officers. Col. Conran of the 3rd Battalion, who was also present, alluded to the rather scanty attendance of Petersfield men that day, and remarked that it was not creditable to the town that those who came from a distance should so far outnumber those who are living on the spot. He hoped the Petersfield men who were present would whip up their comrades and compel them to come out. He referred to the approaching review at Brighton, and expressed his hope that they would all do their very best to render the 3rd Battalion of Hampshire worthy of the occasion. The proceeding closed with three cheers for Colonel Luard and the other officers present. The Volunteers afterwards dined at the Dolphin Hotel. The brass band of the corps from Horndean and the drum and fife band of the left division were in attendance throughout the day.
