Hampshire Chronicle - Saturday 02 October 1852

Lieut-Col. Hawker, who commands the North Hants Militia, in the absence of the Marquis of Winchester, has, with Adjutant Tomlinson, been actively engaged in superintending the enrolment of recruits enlisted in various parts of the county to join the regiment, and within the last few days 121 have been obtained, viz. at Winchester, 46; Romsey, 42; and Petersfield, 33. At the latter place Mr. Bonham Carter, M.P. and Deputy Lieutenant for the County, presented every recruit with sixpence each, to spend, requesting them to deposit the half-sovereign which they had each received as enlistment money in the savings bank, instead of squandering it away foolishly.
