PETERSFIELD.— On Thursday last the landowners and others interested in the Inclosure of Sheet Common and Petersfield Heath, met at the Dolphin Hotel to elect a valuer, and to make other arrangements for carrying out the provisions of the Act passed during the late sessions of Parliament. Most of the resident landowners were present in person, and others appeared by proxy under power of attorney. On the motion of Sir W. G. H. Jolliffe, Bart. M.P., J. Bonham Carter, Esq. M.P. took the chair. Mr. Richard Wakeford Attree handed in a tender for the valuership at £255 9s 9d, which was accepted, and his appointment confirmed by the unanimous vote of the meeting. A series of resolutions was then proposed, embodying instructions for the guidance of the valuer in apportioning the several allotments. These resolutions underwent considerable discussion, in which the chairman, Sir W. Jolliffe, Capt. Hugonin, Messrs. Chase, Elkington, Light, Mitchell, Ring, Seward, &c. took part. The discussion was conducted in the most amicable spirit, and resulted in perfect unanimity. The resolution, which most intimately concerns the inhabitants of Petersfield and its vicinity, was one setting apart about 35 acres of the Heath as recreation ground, to be secured for ever to the free use of the public. In addition to this generous contribution to the public convenience from the landowners generally, the chairman stated that it was his intention to apply any surplus that may remain to him, as Lord of the Manor, from the tolls of Heath Fair to the improvement of this recreation ground. The above proceedings, it will be seen, had reference only to so much of the Heath as is in the parish of Sheet; a similar meeting was to have been held the next day (Friday) in reference to that portion which lies within the parish of Buriton, but owing to a technical informality in the notice by which the meeting was convened, it could not take place, and accordingly stands over for a future day of which due notice will doubtless be given in the usual manner. We heartily congratulate the inhabitants of the town on the result of the above meeting in regard to the 35 acres reserved as recreation ground, and trust that a similar act of generosity on the part of the landowners of Buriton when they meet, will give a still further extension to this valuable boon.
