MAGISTRATES' CLERK'S OFFICE, Thursday, before the Rt. Hon. Sir W. G. H. Jolliffe, Bart., M.P., and John Waddington, Esq.

—   Thomas Chall and Michael Handley, both belonging to the 20th Regiment of Infantry, (a portion of which had been billetted in the town on the previous night, on their route from Aldershott to Hilsea) were brought up in custody charged with violently assaulting P.C. Henry Elderfield. Complainant deposed as follows: Last evening, about nine o’clock, the daughter of the landlady of the ‟Drum,” public-house, called me  to assist in quelling a disturbance, I went to the house and in the parlour I saw two men named New and Underwood very much knocked about, the room was in a great confusion, cups and glasses were broken, and there was a great deal of blood on the floor and the two men were wounded in the head. Just as I entered the room the two prisoners came out and went into the tap-room on the opposite side of the passage; they were pointed out to me as the men who had caused the disturbance; just then the picket arrived, and the sergeant asked me for the men and I showed him the two prisoners, the sergeant then took Handley by the arm, when he immediately made a rush forwvard and gave me a violent kick in the lower part of my stomach, which knocked me back, and I was caught by two of the picket. I was completely disabled and feel the effects still; the other prisoner then seized an earthen jug from the tap-room table and threw it at me, it struck me on the side of my head. He at the same time attempted to kick me, but was prevented. The picket then took them to the Police Station and gave them in charge to Mr. Superintendent Stevenson. Prisoners declined asking witness any questions or saying anything in defence, Handley was sentenced to two months imprisonment and Chall to one month, both with hard labour.

—   Patrick Dwyer and John Thomas Whitehouse, both of the 4th Battalion Military Train, encamped at Woolmer, were brought up on a charge of stealing two ducks, at Greatham, and were remanded to Saturday (this day).
