     12TH HANTS (PETERSFIELD) RIFLE VOLUNTEER COMPETITIVE FIRING.—On Tuesday, the 7th of May, competitive firing took place at Helmington-bottom for the selection of two representatives of the 12th Hants for the Queen’s prize at Wimbledon, at the following ranges, viz., 200, 500, and 600 yards (Wimbledon marking), when Sergeant W. Caplin and Private F. Dear obtained the highest scores out of the competitors assembled. The former scored 22 points at 200, 15 points at 500, and 21 points at 600 yards, making 58 points; and the latter scored 18 points at 200, 16 points at 500, and 12 points at 600 yards, making 46 points, On the following Tuesday, when the weather was exceedingly unpropitious from wind, Sergeant Caplin and Private Dear again became the victors by scoring, the former 18 points at 200, 15 points at 500, and 15 points at 600 yards, making 48 points, and the latter 20 points at 200, 18 points at 500, and 7 points at 600 yards, making 45 points; the total score of Sergeant Caplin being 106 points, and Private Dear 91 points.

     A somewhat close competition took place between Private H. Caplin and Private Dear—Private Caplin scoring 88 points, viz., 46 in the first and 42 points in the second firing, making 88 points, losing his place by three points.

     On the latter day Captain Seward’s monthly challenge cup was shot for between the members of the 12th Hants, when Sergeant W. Caplin became the winner by the following score at 600 yards, and seven rounds, viz.:—2 r 3 3 3 2 2.—Total, 15 points. The following being the rule of firing:—

     The first month at 200 yards, seven rounds, won by Sergeant Cole. Second month, at 500 yards, seven rounds, won by Sergeant Cole. Third month, at 600 yards, seven rounds, won by Sergeant Caplin.
     The monthly firing will continue until won three times by the same competitor, when the cup will be retained by the winner. The following members being handicapped, thereby places the whole upon equality, viz.:—
