PETERSFIELD.—A NARROW ESCAPE.—On Thursday afternoon, during the match of cricket between the club and the rifles, an accident happened to a little girl of about eight years old, daughter of Elijah Wakeford, carpenter, of Petersfield, by her clothes taking fire. It appeared that the little girl in question was standing with another little girl near a fire made on the ground, for the purpose of making hot water, when her clothes suddenly caught fire, and in a moment she was enveloped in flames. Luckily some active persons were standing close by who instantly threw her on the ground and smothered the flames, and we are glad to say without doing any further mischief than a scorching and the burning off her frock, &c.
Ancestry shows the marriage of Kate Wakeford, (father Elijah) in 1876 aged 22. Probably the same girl.
