PETERSFIELD.
A NOVELTY.—A FLOCK OF STARLINGS IN A WHIRLWIND.—On Thursday last, about one o'clock, a whirlwind of considerable force occurred in the parish of Steep, approaching from the north to a southerly direction, and which, in crossing the meadow in front of Mr. Moody's, of Elm Cottage, arrested the attention of several lookers-on, who were watching its outward progress. At the time of its arrival a flock of starlings of about 100, were feeding in close order—according to the habits of this class of birds—when the encircling current took them up in the embrace, and in whirling flight carried them around to a height of at least 40 feet, where, after a short stay, descended them in the same circling form to the ground; upon reaching which they appeared in a state of giddy stupefaction, so much so as to have rendered them easily caught for a short time after.
