PETERSFIELD.]—A NAVVY'S TRICK.—There are working about this district a great number of that class of persons known as ‟navvies.” The following trick has been practised by some ‟run about” ones within the last few days. Three or four of them go to the clergyman’s or some other respectable person’s residence, (but principally clergymen’s) and after procuring an interview, and telling a long round-about tale, said, ‟We are just come into your parish for a considerable time, but having no money before we have been to work, we shall feel greatly obliged if you will kindly lend us a sovereign till Saturday night, when we will be sure to re-pay it.” In a few instances the fellows have been successful; but of course Saturday has not come. In one instance they went to the curate of a parish, and told him they knew he was only a curate, and did not suppose he could afford to give them any money, but if he would kindly lend then 5 shillings till Saturday night they would be sure to bring it back. Saturday night came in this instance, but instead of bringing back the money, they wanted to borrow more. We would caution our friends to beware of such impostors.
