A PUBLIC HOUSE SNEAK.—The good folks of our quiet village were on Monday last, the 24th inst., alarmed by the report that a robbery had been committed in it. It turned to be too true. It appeared that a shoemaker had taken up his abode for the night at the Blue Bell, and his not coming down with others who had slept in the same room with him excited a little of woman’s curiosity. At last he made his appearance, but his bundle, to the eyes of the watchful landlady, larger than it did on his arrival. He left the house for the road. A search was made, and a pair of trousers found wanting. P.C. Marchant was soon on the track, and starting by train to Petersfield. On his arrival at the platform he saw his man in the act of leaving for Portsmouth, he kindly invited him to stop, and, as P.C. Marchant took no denial, the sneak consented to be searched, and the lost article was found on him. He was then taken to one of the Queen’s Reception Houses for such gentlemen, to wait for further hearing and orders.
