A PULLET SEVENTEEN DAYS WITHOUT FOOD OR DRINK. — A rare instance of a fowl existing without sustenance for 17 days, occurred lately at the Fighting Cocks Inn in this town, kept by Mr. Blanchard. The facts are as follows:— On the 22nd of last March the pullet in question was missed and nothing having been heard of her she was given up as lost. However, on the 8th of April, as the landlady was picking up some scraps of wood (in the Old Club Room attached to the house, now used as a lumber room), she accidentally displaced a two dozen hamper, minus the lid, which had been turned over on its opening, when to her surprise, and doubtful vision, from the place being semi-darkened, she saw or fancied she saw, reel away to the lighted space, her long lost pullet, so weak as to fall as she went. Upon reaching the same she began eagerly picking up sand and gravel. Every attention was at once paid, and softened food and water provided, and now, strange to say, is with her mates perfectly recovered. It was found that two eggs had been laid during her accidental imprisonment, the cause of which appears to have been from the hamper standing on its bottom in an upright position, and the unfortunate prisoner springing upon its side, which, from her weight had turned over, forming a sort of trap for the lengthened period of her existence, as if to prove the time that nature could endure under the circumstance stated above.
