PETERSFIELD, DECEMBER 14.
A STRANGE VISITOR.—A few days since a fine auk was taken alive on the estate of Mr. W. E. Butler, of Le Court, Greatham, by one of the work people. These singular birds, we are informed, have seldom, if ever, been known to visit our shores, being inhabitants of Iceland, Norway, and the colder regions of the Arctic Circle. This specimen, which was very beautiful of its kind, was despatched to Dr. Bell, the eminent naturalist, and by him forwarded to the Zoological Gardens, but unfortunately, owing either to the change of climate, or the lack of its proper food, it died shortly after its arrival. We understand the bird has been stuffed, and will be deposited in the County Museum.
