Alton Alresford and Winchester Railway.—An influential meeting of the inhabitants of Alresford and its neighbourhood, in regard to this undertaking, was held at the Swan Inn, Alresford, on Thursday last. The Rev. J. T. Maine, of Brighton Wood, having been places in the chair, in a most able speech explained the objects of the undertaking, and the benefits which would be conferred on the district by the above railway accommodation and by the addition of a branch therefrom to Petersfield. The solicitor explained the position of the negotiation with the South-Western Company and with Mr. Brassey, the contractor for the line; and resolutions were passed pledging the meeting to support the line between Alresford and Petersfield so as to connect the important market towns of Petersfield, Alresford, Alton, and Winchester, placing them all in communication with Southampton and Petersfield Railway. A resolution was also passed requesting the members for the Northern Division of the County to assist in the objects of the meeting, and the proceedings terminated with a vote of thanks to the chairman.
