ANOTHER GALA DAY ON THE HEATH.—We had occasIon last week to record the particulars of an animated scene on our Heath in connection with Coronation-day. This, however, was greatly surpassed by a scene which was presented on the same spot on Thursday last. Most of our readers are aware that Woolmer Forest, about five miles from this town, has lately become a sort of off-shoot from the camp at Aldershott. The troops are sent out from the latter place to the forest from time to time for temporary encampment. There are at present about 4,000 under canvass there, and of these about 2,500 visited this town on Thursday last, consisting of one division of Lancers, two of Infantry (16th and 45th), and a body of Artillery, with 12 Armstrong guns. They entered the town about twelve o’clock by Ramshill, and marching through College-street, Dragon-street, and Golden Ball-street, round Heath Lodge, by the newly formed road, they entered the Heath at the bottom of Horn-lane. The cavalry took up their position near the Cricket-ground, the infantry wheeled to the right to a spot near the Music-hill, and having ‟piled arms” they proceeded with the utmost alacrity to make the needful preparations for replenishing the ‟inner man.” The business of dinner having been brought to a close, the several bands played in succession and in excellent style several airs, after which the bugle sounded, and the various divisions having fallen in the whole ‟marched past” at a spot near the foot of the Cattle-hill. This movement presented a splendid spectacle, the sun, which shone out brilliantly during the whole of the proceedings, happening at this moment to be in such a position relatively to the spectators as to be reflected with dazzling effect upon the arms and accoutrements of the vast body in motion. Immediately after this movement the march home commenced by the road leading to Penn’s Farm, thence to Sheet, en route to the camp. There was a very large and fashionable assemblage of spectators, many of the principal gentry of the neighbourhood being present.
