PETERSFIELD.
ANOTHER ONE AT IT.—"THE OLD DODGE" OF THE "CASUAL."— On Saturday night last a man who gave his name as George Weston, age 28, of Lewes, upon tramp from Portsmouth to Farnham, for hop-picking, applied for and obtained lodging for the night in the casual ward at the union at Petersfield. On the following morning (Sunday) the master (Mr. Dollery), upon opening the wards for the purpose of discharging the occupants for the night, was somewhat surprised at the revival of the "old dodge" of the casual squatting upon the bench in all his glory, with his union rug around him, and on the floor beneath every particle of his late toggery torn into shreds and lying in a heap. Upon being questioned as to his conduct he unhesitatingly made a clean breast of it by saying :I did it for a better suit, I knew they could not turn me out naked, and I've worn the other long enough." The police having been sent for, the denuded casual was given into custody, and being sufficiently re-togged to make his appearance, he was marched off through the streets to "durance vile." On Monday the prisoner was taken to the Magistrates’ Clerk's Office, before Capt. Sandeman, and committed to house of correction at Winchester for 14 days’ hard labour, instead of exhibiting himself in his "new suit" amongst the motley gathering assembled at Farnham at the present hop-picking season at least.
