     A still more important class is that of preserved provisions, entering so largely now into the commissariat of the sea, and bearing so directly on the health of sailors, and the comfort of passengers. Far down on the list Great Britain figures, in the first instance, with a gold medal for Liebig's extract of beef; the Messrs. Kidd and Hunter, of Glasgow, ditto; Mr. J. T. Morton and Mr. C. J. Tindal, of London, take silver medals for preserved meats; and Messrs. W. J. Coleman, also of the metropolis, for their mustard and tinned boneless beef, especially prepared for ships’ use. The bronze order is conferred upon Messrs. Condy for their concentrated vinegar; the Messrs. Forbes for their bottles and cases,  which being opened after a year or two would suffice to spread a mayoralty banquet; Mr. T. Amey, of the Rushes and Marsh Farms, Petersfield, for his dried milk, now largely supplied to the Royal navy; and the Messrs. Marshall, of Aberdeen, for their substantial preserves. …
