BRUTAL AND COWARDLY ASSAULT BY POACHERS. — On Wednesday evening, about 6 o'clock as Albert Lambert, assistant-keeper to Mr. J. Bonham Carter, M.P., was out on his beat, he heard two reports of a gun in Sens Bushes, on the Down, in the parish of Buriton. Proceeding to the spot he observed two men leaving the same, about 100 yards distant, whom he at once followed, and upon coming up with them, without a word being spoken, received a violent blow from the butt-end of a gun upon the left side of his face, which felled him to the ground. It appears the unfortunate victim of vengeance laid for some time upon the ground, upon which a large quantity of blood had flown, and upon awaking to consciousness he proceeded as well as his state would allow to his home, where, upon the arrival of medical aid, it was found that his jaw was fractured, his ear cut through, and the side of his face sadly injured. As yet the cowardly and brutal assailants are undetected, but great hopes are entertained that they will soon be in the hands of justice.
