PETERSFIELD

Agent—Mr. G. DUPLOCK.

CATTLE PLAGUE.—A meeting of the Petersfield district committee was held at the Town-hall, on Tuesday last; the Hon. J. J. Carnegie in the chair. Mr. Waddington called the attention of the committee to the extreme stringency of clause 33 of the new order in council which comes into operation on Monday next. This clause provides that ‟no cattle shall be moved by or upon any railway, canal navigation, river, or highway, or by any vessel coastwise, without a license, except for a distance not exceeding 500 yards from one part of the same farm to the other.” Mr. Waddington contended that the effect of this clause would be that many farmers would be prevented driving their cows to and from pasture without a license, as it might often happen that the distance exceeded 500 yards, which would be a great hardship, and he thought it very desirable that the stringency of this clause should be relaxed. After some discussion the meeting adjourned, for the purpose of communicating with the ‟local authority” at Winchester.
