PETERSFIELD.]—THE FORTHCOMING MARRIAGE OF THE PRINCE OF WALES.—No steps have been taken yet by the authorities in this town as to how the marriage of the Prince of Wales is to be celebrated on Tuesday, the 10th proximo, beyond the suggestion of Lieut.-Colonel Nicholson, R.E., who is making preparations for bonfires on the South Down Hills, commencing himself on War Down, which is the highest point of the South Downs in this neighbourhood. This chain of hills extends to the Brighton Racecourse, and if lit up by the inhabitants along the different localities successively, will have a beautiful and also fine effect. The fire will commence at 10 o’clock p.m. on War Down, after which a succession of splendid fire-works, manufactured by a celebrated pyrotechnist, will be let off. This display will no doubt have a lasting impression on the minds of both old and young, if properly carried out. The general impression is that the day will be kept in this town as a holiday, by the closing of shops, and a thorough suspension of business. A cheap excursion train is also spoken of to London and back, returning from the Waterloo-station late the same evening. Return tickets are to be issued for the following day, by paying an extra 1s., 2s., and 3s., according to the class of ticket issued. Should this privilege be granted, we trust railway authorities will give the public the benefit of comfortable closed third-class carriages each way.
