PETERSFIELD.]—OUR BOROUGH.—We shall have some remarks to offer in our next week’s paper, in reference to the representation of the immaculate and model nomination borough of Petersfield, one of the oldest existing close boroughs in the kingdom. This, with the neighbouring borough of Midhurst, has no parallel. The electors of each place number a large and respectable body of voters, who have not the slightest power in the choice of a representative. Mr. Hardy, the present member for Midhurst, was recently imported into that town by the patron of the borough, and appointed M.P., though he was previously unknown to any individual in the neighbourhood. This originally was the state of things in the borough of Petersfield, before the passing of the Reform Bill. The patron’s colleague, we remember, was on one occasion Lord Hotham, a relict of the present lord, who recently moved for a new writ for the borough of Midhurst. In this particular case there was an unusual departure from the general rule, which we are not in a position to explain. The doom of this accursed system, we heartily hope, is sealed.
