PETERSFIELD.

CONVERSAZIONE.—The members of the Young Men’s Improvement Society gave their third annual entertainment on Tuesday evening last, in the National School Rooms. The Rev. J. M. Sumner, as president of the society, occupied the chair, and opened the proceedings with some appropriate remarks on education and mental culture generally. The programme gave promise of a rich mental feast, and the crowded state of the rooms shewed that the public appetite was sharpened for the occasion. There were not less than 400 persons present, and judging from the amount of applause accorded to the several performances, the anticipated ‟feast of reason” was fully realized. The entertainment consisted of vocal music, recitations, &c., &c., the whole of which were given in a very creditable style. To say that there is no room for improvement would be simply absurd, but we heartily congratulate the young men of Petersfield on the progress they are making. Thanks were voted by acclamation to the chairman, who, in acknowledging the same, proposed the thanks of the meeting to the members of the Young Men’s Improvement Society, which was also carried by acclamation and followed by three cheers for their success. We must not omit to mention the very elegant and tasteful manner in which the rooms were decorated on the occasion with evergreens, &c.
