PETERSFIELD
CHARGE OF STEALING A VALUABLE WATCH FROM THE POCKET.—On Monday, at the Town Hall, THOS. BOND, aged 54, and MARGARET BOND, aged 30, said to be man and wife, and strangers upon the road, were brought up under remand, before J. Waddington, Esq., charged with stealing a silver watch from the trouser pocket of William Woods, who deposed—I am stableman, in the service of Mr. Crafts, at the Dolphin Hotel. About eight o'clock in the evening I was standing at the stable doors. The stable adjoins the high-road. The female prisoner came to me there, and began pulling me about. I had a silver watch in my trousers pocket attached by a guard chain round my neck, and to the watch by a small steel ring. I looked at the watch but a few minutes before, after which the woman came and put some questions to me, and began pulling me about the stomach. I told her to go away. I didn't want anything to do with her. She then said, how many horses are in the stable. I said never mind, you go out. She walked down the stable, and said one, two, three, four stalls, and only two horses. She then went to the door, and said then you haven't a mind to have anything to say, you're a ————— old stood about half way open. The man then made his appearance at the door, which stood about half way open. He looked round the door, and they both left. About five minutes after I missed my watch. I found the chain hanging round my neck loose, and the steel ring was gone. I had not seen anybody from the time the prisoner left till I lost my watch. The watch was worth £5. I gave the guard chain to P.C. Jenner. I went with him to the George Inn, it was nearly 10 o'clock. I saw the prisoners there, and gave them into custody. I saw the prisoners a little past seven, and again about nine o'clock. The chain was through the ring.
Thomas Jenner deposed—I am police constable. On Wednesday evening, the 7th of this month, I went with last witness to the George Inn, and the prosecutor gave the prisoners into custody for stealing his watch. I charged them both, and told them they must go with me to the police station. They said I must be mistaken, and refused to go. The female took her hat and shawl off, and put them on the table, and said she should not go. Police Constable Hayter was there. I told him to take the man, and I would take the woman. I took up her hat, and told her to come with me. She said she should not. I then took her out under the arms, she resisted a good deal; she was very drunk. When I got her outside she struggled, and tried to bite me. I let her go, and she fell against the wall. I believe she struck her head. I fell partly on the top of her. She said she would not go with me, she would go with the other man; they then went quietly to the station, and upon searching I found 14s. 6d in silver upon the male prisoner, and the female prisoner had 1s. 6½d. The female prisoner became very violent upon being put into the cell, and struck me, and also Superintendent Bennett.—Both the prisoners were committed for trial at the coming quarter sessions at Winchester.
