CRICKET.—PETERSFIELD v. ALRESFORD.—This match had been looked forward to with more than ordinary interest, as it was considered a very bold and ‟plucky” venture on the part of young Petersfield to challenge a Club of such high position and long standing as that of Alresford. The gauntlet, however, had been thrown down and the challenge accepted, and a very large concourse of spectators assembled on the Heath on Monday last to witness the contest. many and confident were the predictions of Petersfield’s discomfiture, the result however showed that our young club is made of the right sort of stuff, as they beat their opponents by single innings with 37 runs to spare. Alresford sustained their defeat as heroes should do, and retired from the field if not quite satisfied, still in perfect good humour; and after spending a pleasant evening with their victorious friends, left the town, enlivening their exit as they had done their entrèe in the morning, with the lively strains of a cornopean. Wed did not catch the precise tune, but it was not ‟See the conquering Hero Comes.” We subjoin the score. The return match comes of at Alresford on Monday next.
