HASLEMERE v. PETERSFIELD

This match came off on Monday on the Lion Green. Haslemere first taking the willow were disposed of in the usual manner for 62 runs. Petersfield next went to the wickets, and after a few were disposed of Clear and Blunden got well in, and although the bowling of Messrs Sadler and Chuter was first-rate, they were unable to approach the timber of their opponents. All sorts of manœvres were resorted to—slow bowling, long lobs, &c. ; but neither had any effect, till at last both wickets were finely taken by Chuter, for 32 runs each. The others were soon knocked over, making a total of 103 runs, heading their opponents by 41. Messrs Death and Sadler then resumed the willow on the part of Haslemere; but soon losing their wickets they were replaced by Marden and Knight, who exhibited symptoms of great resistance, doing their work in splendid manner until Marden’s wicket was taken by one of Mr Lucas’s slows for 25 runs. Mr C. Parsons next going to the wicket seemed determined to avenge himself on his adversaries, making some beautiful drives right and left, and clearing everything before him. When time was called three wickets only had been lost for 91 runs. The day being remarkable fine, the cricketers were honoured by the presence of most of the neighbouring gentry.
