THE OFFICERS OF PORTSMOUTH GARRISON v. PETERSFIELD CLUB.
On Saturday last an interesting match of cricket took place on the Heath, between the officers of the garrison comprising the 1st Royals, the 53rd and 55th Regiments, and eleven of the Petersfield Club, when, some first rate play was exhibited on both sides. Upon the arrival of the officers by the 11.35 train, they at once proceeded to the cricket ground, when the whole of the eleven not putting in their appearance 12 o’clock, the campaign commenced by Captains White and Wetherall being placed on the defensive, against the balls of Beauchamp and Clear. Captain Wetherall’s timber being soon scattered, with a round ball by a teller from J. Etherington, Captain Maxwell took his position, and play commenced in good earnest, keeping the field upon the qui vive until a ball from Beauchamp paid a visit to Captain White’s stumps, two wickets and 59 runs. Captain Truell next faced Captain Maxwell, when a set to commenced in a style which proved they were the right men for keeping their opponents upon the alert in leather hunting, and giving full employment to the scorers till 2 o’clock, when the bus reached the ground to convey the party to dinner, at which time the score had run up to 97. The cricketers and their friends at once proceeded to the Dolphin Hotel, where a capital spread in accordance with Mr. Crafts well known style was placed on the tables, and which was satisfactorily disposed of free from ceremony, and without loss of time. J. Bonham Carter, Esq., M.P., (president of the club) took the chair. Dinner being over the players again proceeded to the ground, when after some slashing hitting, Captain Truell was served by Beauchamp with notice to quit. Three wickets and 108 runs. A change now came over the spirit of the game, from the slow bowling of Lucas, and allowed tbe Petersfieldians to breathe more freely, the six following officers being placed hort de combat for 24 runs, making together with the byes 142, The Petersfield eleven then commenced their first innings against excellent bowling of Major Harene and Captain Maxwell, and although they played well, still was evident that fortune was not disposed to patronize their efforts on that day at least, only two, viz., Blunden and Beauchamp having made double figures, the whole scoring only 62 runs. It being necessary to leave off the play at 6.30, so as to allow tbe officers to meet the 7.1 down train. The Petersfield eleven followed their innings, which at its close stood well, being one wicket and 23 runs. The delightful weather with the novelty of the match, probably the first ever played between the military and civilians upon this the native ground of John Small, the prince of batsmen, in days of yore, drew together a goodly number of the gentry and respectability of the neighbourhood, who appeared to thoroughly appreciate and enjoy the scene. The score was as follows :—
