PETERSFIELD.—MAYOR CHOOSING.—On Monday, the 16th inst., the annual farce of choosing a Mayor and other officers took place in the Town-hall. The packed jury, with some considerable trouble, were got together for the occasion, but not without threats to fine non-attendants. The respectable tenants of the Lord of the Court Leet summoned, are compelled to give their attendance, to sanction all the tom foolery enforced upon them on this occasion. The progress of the march of intellect is now beginning to convince this respectable body of the inhabitants of Petersfield, that they ought to exercise the right of private judgment, and also to have a will of their own and a free conscience. This old system is now dying away, and the sooner the funeral knell is tolled over it the better. Originally there were large parties entertained with a dinner, also professionals in attendance from London, joints of meat were distributed almost ad libitum, to the poor tenants who were £10 voters in the interest of the patron of the Borough, and last of all a distribution of copper money was heated in the fire, and thrown from the dining-room windows at the hotel for the mob-ocracy to scramble. There being such a scarcity of candidates, the whole of the old ones were compelled to continue in office for the ensuing year.
