PETERSFIELD. —Wednesday last, the day set apart for humiliation and prayer, was strictly observed here, the shops being universally closed, and business of every kind entirely suspended. The attendance at church was unusually large, and a collection, amounting £30 12s 11d., was made, on behalf of the wives and children of the soldiers and sailors engaged in the war. Two excellent and appropriate sermons were preached on the occasion, that in the morning by the Rev. J. Williams from Rev. xvi. 12, and that in the evening by the Rev. W. Sealy, from Exodus xvii. 9—11. There was also service at the Independent Chapel morning and evening, with overflowing congregations, and a collection after each service.
