PETERSFIELD
Agent—Mr. G. Duplock
‟Only a few brief weeks have elapsed,” says a correspondent, ‟since our town, in common with others throughout the land, wore a funeral aspect, in the almost universal closing of its shops, in token of sorrow for a great loss and profound respect for the memory of the departed;—this was a national affair. We have this week the melancholy duty of chronicling a local event, which has called forth a similar manifestation of feeling in the town. We allude to the lamented death of Mrs. Bonham Carter, wife of J. Bonham Carter, Esq., M.P. for Winchester. The deceased lady was universally and most deservedly esteemed by all classes in the neighbourhood; and in her death the poor have lost a most valuable friend and benefactress. The funeral took place on Tuesday last, at Buriton. There was a large attendance of the hon. gentleman’s tenantry, tradesmen, and others. The burial service was feelingly read by the Rev. J. M. Sumner, and the funeral arrangements were under the direction of Mr. Small, of this town. Almost every shop in Petersfield was partially closed throughout the day.”
