ELECTION FOR NORTH HANTS.—WINCHESTER
March 24.—At a meeting, on Saturday last, at the George Hotel, Winchester, of voters favourable to the return of M. Portal, Esq., of Freefolk, near Whitchurch, in the place of Sir Wm. Heathcote, resigned, which was fully attended by many of the leading landowners, agriculturists, and other voters, it was resolved that their united exertions should be used to insure that gentleman’s return, and that as many as could possibly attend to escort that candidate should assemble early on Saturday morning next, to accompany him to the Castle at the hour of nomination. The same unanimous feeling is also shown at Alton, Andover, Bishop Waltham, Kingsclere, Odiham, Petersfield, and other towns in that division of the county. It was reported on Friday that a second gentleman would be brought forward in the Baring interest. The Sheriff, William Garnier, Esq., has appointed Tuesday and Wednesday, the 3d and 4th of April, for the polling, in case of a contest, and not the 4th and 5th of April, as reported last week.
