PETERSFIELD.]—LECTURE.—On Wednesday evening, the 11th inst., Mr. Frederick York Mellon gave a very interesting and amusing entertainment in the Assembly Room, at the Dolphin Hotel, kindly lent for the occasion by Mr. Craft, for the benefit of the Petersfield Library and Reading-room, commencing with a recitation of Macbeth, from Shakespeare. The remaining portion of the entertainment caused a continual roar of laughter by an overflowing audience of the highest respectability. The crowded state of the room was caused by the great and unceasing exertions of Mr. Alfred Dusautoy, the Treasurer to the Institution, who will be much pleased to receive donations from any philanthropic individuals who are not annual subscribers. During the entertainment the musicians belonging to the Harmonic Society performed several pieces of suitable music, which had a very pretty effect, and was much appreciated by the inhabitants. Those who are fortunate enough to secure Mr. Mellon's services will never regret dropping in to hear him. During the week he has visited Hambledon, and we hear he intends shortly to be at Alton. At the close a vote of thanks was proposed by the senior clergyman of the town, the Rev. M. A. Smelt, M.A., in a very suitable and appropriate manner, which was seconded by Mr. A. Dusautoy. Mr. Mellon replied, after which the large assemblage retired to their homes, highly pleased with the evening's entertainment.
