ESCAPE AND RECAPTURE OF A PRISONER.— On Wednesday evening, the 12th ultimo, a prisoner, named John Berghen, who was being escorted by a county policeman to gaol, to which he had been committed from Petersfield, on a charge of stealing a watch, contrived to escape while going up the Romsey Road, by suddenly running away in front of Clifton Terrace, and, having gained Sussex-lane, he got a good start of his pursuer, who could not keep pace with him, and he speedily, favoured by the darkness, secreted himself in some portion of the city. He succeeded in remaining incognito till the following Friday, when he was taken into custody by one of the Winchester city constabulary, who immediately handed him over to the county authorities.
