FARNHAM NEW CATTLE MARKET.—The establish of a Cattle Market in this town has long been a desideratum, and it is now probable that this most desirable object will shortly be obtained. A meeting was held on Thursday at the Assembly Room Goat's Head Inn and prior to time fixed tor business (half-past 3) the spacious room was crowded to excess. The chair was most ably filled by G. T. Nicholson, Esq., of Waverley, who, in a speech of considerable length, alluded to the many facilities possessed, and the advantageous situation Farnham, for the establishment of a fortnightly Cattle Market, more especially to the breeders and fatters of stock by its proximity to the Railway Station, which would probably render it the mart of the London dealers—this had been apparent in the fairs which had been held since the opening of the London and South Western line of road—the stock exhibited had been increased in a tenfold ration, and been readily taken off for the London markets. The Bishop Winchester, with that kindness for which he is distinguished, has consented (independent of a liberal subscription in furtherance of the object) to relinquish his claims to the tolls and dues arising from the proposed Market, to which, as lord the manor, he is entitled, and the expense of pens will be defrayed by a liberal and voluntary subscription. To the breeders of cattle who attend the neighbouring market of Petersfield, which is held every alternate Wednesday, the stock remaining unsold would naturally find a ready sale on the following day at Farnham, and the very improbable event of failing there, by railway communication might reach London in time for Friday's market. It is hoped that the establishment of this market is but the prelude to further improvements, a new Market House must, and will inevitably, follow, and it is gratifying to notice that no obstacle is likely to present itself to prevent the erection of so desirable a building. The resolutions stated, that Farnham, from its advantageous situation, possesses many facilities for the establishment and support of a fortnightly Cattle Market. That the ordinary fairs held at Farnham being inadequate for the transaction of the progressively increasing business of the neighbourhood, and the inconvenience arising from the want of a more frequent market for the sale of stock having long been seriously felt, it was desirable to establish a periodical Cattle Market at Farnham, every other Thursday, between the hours of nine and one, and that the first Market shall be held on Thursday, the 28th day October next. That the expense of pens be defrayed by subscriptions, the Lord Bishop of Winchester having kindly relinquished the tolls and dues arising on the occasion The remaining resolutions were for the appointment of a committee of management, and obtaining the signatures and subscriptions of those gentlemen who feel disposed to bestow their patronage and support in the undertaking. The list contains the names of many influential persons, and the subscriptions in the room amounted to about 150l.
