A FINE OR IMPRISONMENT
Two cases are reported in our paper this week in which the magistrates have very properly sent the defendants to prison, instead of inflicting the usual fine. One will be read in the Petworth news, in which it will be seen that a pack of low scoundrels have been in the habit of disturbing a congregation at their devotions. One of the ringleaders has been trapped and caged. As our correspondent very truly remarks, had a simple fine been inflicted, the money would have been subscribed by the offending parties, and the whole matter settled up. Another case will be read in the Petersfield news, in which a cowardly youth of 16 severely beat three little boys with a strap in a most inhuman manner. The despicable youth is sent off to “durance ;” and it is right and just that he should have the prison brand upon him for such an inhuman offence.
