HARTING COMB, IN THE PARISH OF ROGATE.

     TO be SOLD by AUCTION, by Mr. MEERES, at the White Horse Inn, Rogate, on Monday, the 28th Day of February, 1859, at Two for Three o’Clock in the Afternoon, (subject to Conditions then to be produced) unless previously disposed of by Private Contract. —The PALACE of HARTING COMB, a rural retreat of unrivalled beauty and distinguished characteristics, delightfully situated in Harting Comb, within half a mile or thereabouts of the London and Portsmouth Turnpike Road at Rake, abutting the celebrated ‟Lake” formerly the ‟Furnace Pond,” lands of Reginald Neville, Esq., and the open Comb, and being little more than one mile distant from the Portsmouth Railway, together with stables, sheds, outbuildings, piggeries, and several closes of meadow and other land, of the richest quality and containing in the whole five acres, two roods, and 22 perches, and now in the occupation of Mrs. Elizabeth Gale, together with a small but very picturesque COTTAGE RESIDENCE delightfully situated at the Eastern Corner of Harting Comb, and called ‟Comb Lodge” with convenient outbuildings, Garden and Plot of Land, comprising altogether three roods and 23 perches, now in the occupation of Mr. James Stent. 

     N.B.—The above quantities are Exclusive of the Allotment to which the Purchaser will be entitled on the Inclosure of Harting Comb now in progress.

     The Property is held for a Term of 499 Years from the 25th March, 1750, at the Annual Quit Rent of 4s., Heriot 4s. on Death and Relief 4s. on Alienation. (see definitions below)

DEFINITIONS

Quit Rent — a tax or land tax imposed on occupants of freehold or leased land in lieu of services to a higher landowning authority, usually a government or its assigns 

Heriot — a tribute paid to a lord out of the belongings of a tenant who died, often consisting of a live animal or, originally, military equipment that he borrowed 

Alienation — the transfer of ownership of property rights
