FOX HUNTING IN HAMPSHIRE.

Basing Park is as compact an estate as can be found in the centre of Hampshire. It extends some distance, having several entrances, and magnificent drives reaching the house, from the Gosport turnpike, near West Tisted; or from the Dean, Winchester; and Petersfield, near Langrish. There are lodges, and the drives through the park during the summer are beautiful. The soil is heavy, being very strong land. The improvement made by the present occupier is, I hear, on a large scale, and the worthy M.P. (Mr. Nicholson) for Petersfield is taking care not only to improve his residence, but also to re-arrange the farms on entirely new plans. His predecessor was a staunch supporter of game, and thoroughly enjoyed fox hunting, but cover shooting was his favourite sport until he met with a severe accident by the shot lodging in or near they eye.
