PETERSFIELD.

LIGHTING THE TOWN WITH GAS.—This much desiderated object has at length been accomplished, and in a highly satisfactory manner. The town was lighted up for the first time, on Wednesday evening last. The works reflect great credit on the contractor, Mr. G. E Child of Southwold, Suffolk. The buildings are of a plain and unpretending but substantial character, and the entire ‟plant” is constructed on the most approved principle, and there is every reason to hope that it will work well. The directors have studiously avoided all unnecessary outlay for purposes of show but have spared no expense in the working and really useful departments. It is gratifying to find that the company starts with a much greater number of burners than the most sanguine promoters of the scheme had anticipated.
