THE KNIFE.George Merritt was brought up at the Magistrates’ Clerk’s Office on Tuesday, before Sir W. Knighton, Bart., charged with cutting and wounding Henry Eames, both labourers, of the parish of Cutherington. It appeared from the evidence adduced that prosecutor and prisoner, with others, were at the Spotted Cow, public house, at Cowplain, Cutherington, on the evening of Tuesday last, when, at about half-past 10 o’clock, a quarrel ensued about the 5th Commandment, and a blow or two struck, after which both shook hands. The party remained together till near 12 o’clock, when a separation took place, and the prosecutor, prisoner, and another, proceeded along the road for about half a mile on their way home, when prisoner suddenly struck prosecutor with his knife, and in doing so nearly severed his nose from his face.—The prisoner was committed for trial at the next Winter Assizes, to be holden at Winchester.
