The following inquest was taken by Mr Todd at Petersfield, on the body of Charles Peace, a private soldier in the 7th Fusiliers, who shot himself early on Friday morning, in his bed-room, at a public-house near the town. Deceased was employed with Edward Reeve, a corporal in the same regiment, to escort a deserter, of the name of Richard Scott, from Odiham to Portsmouth, but by some means or other the man escaped from them upon the road, from which moment the deceased fell into a state of distraction, almost amounting to frenzy, which continued till he committed the rash act of self-destruction. He had for eighteen years borne an excellent character in the regiment, and could not bear the thought of having to disgraced himself by neglect of duty. Verdict, "Temporary Derangement."
