WINDMILL DOWN AGAIN.—PADDY AND HIS FRIEND v. PETER, THE ITALIAN.—During the first hour of the morning of Thursday, long before ‟the early bird catches the worm,” a rather strange recounter and capture, under an accidental meeting upon travel, took place on the turnpike road over the above named Down, leading from this town to Horndean. The facts appear to be as follows : —Two Irish water-cress merchants were out upon travel for business purposes, from Portsmouth; and having reached one mile this side of Horndean gate, they there met Peter Fienzi, an Italian, and native of the Roman States. Upon meeting, it appears that the ‟Pat-landers” addressed the Italian (who was carrying a bundle with his coat over his shoulder) in some of their native phraseology, which, whether intentional or not, seems to have given offence to the latter when words ensued, and blows followed, the bundle fell back upon the road, and bursting open, exposed two dead warm unpicked hens. The prisoner and his bundle was then taken by his captors to Horndean, and delivered into the custody of P.C. Henry Grant, who, in the course of the morning brought the prisoner on to the station here to await the hearing of his case on Tuesday. It has further transpired that the Mill premises, situate on the top of the bill (which gives its name to the down), being a long way from any public road, was broken into in the course of the night, and the hens were stolen therefrom.
