PETERSFIELD—A lecture was delivered yesterday evening se’nnight (in connection with the Adult Schools) in the National School-rooms, by the Rev. S. Mayhew, on ‟Things in the Earth,” illustrated by illuminations of a first-rate description. Mr. Mayhew gave a lucid description of the principles of geology, and showed in the clearest possible manner how the study of this science harmonised with Scripture. He then traced the several formations and strata of which the crust of our globe is composed, and by means of his ‟illuminations‟ gave interesting details of the animals that peopled our globe during the several epochs of its existence. The lecture lasted nearly two hours, and was delivered orally, riveting the attention of the audience. At the conclusion a well-merited vote of thanks was proposed by the rector(the Rev. J. M. Sumner), through whose kindness provision has been made for a course of free lectures during the winter.
