PETERSFIELD, Saturday, March 7.
ON A TOUR FOR RECREATION AND PLEASURE—CAUTION TO INNKEEPERS.—A week or two back a young man of about 27 years of age, of respectable appearance, in height about 5 feet 6 inches, of light complexion, auburn hair, wearing a black coat with silk facings, black waistcoat, dark grey trousers, light over coat, with fashionable black hat, called at Mr. W. Bailey's, the Queen's Head, Sheet, for refreshments. During his repast he stated that he had walked on from Haslemere, where he had left his horse, which had bolted with him upon entering the town, and ran against a dead wall, from which his knees were broken, and he was otherwise much injured, which, from information received, is proved to be utterly false. He then enquired if he could be recommended to some respectable inn, or quiet hotel, where his expenses would not exceed 20s or 24s per week, his object being to travel about the country for recreation and pleasure previous to going to India, On the first day (Saturday) of his visit to the inn he was anxious to see the Guildford news, and consequently came on to the office in connection with the Surrey Standard in this town. He again called on the morning of Tuesday to see the copy of the same paper published on that day, and having so done, he omitted to return to his quarters for his dinner, which he had ordered, or to pay his bill from the previous Saturday. It is conjectured that having played off a similar trick at Guildford, or in some other way committed himself, so as to render his further presence un- desirable at the Queen's Head, he therefore proceeded on his travels for "recreation and pleasure."
