PETERSFIELD.
A meeting of the inhabitants took place in the Town Hall, on Wednesday to take into consideration the best steps necessary for celebrating the coming event on the 10th proximo, the Rev. J. M. Sumner in the chair. After considerable discussion the following resolutions were adopted, viz.:—
1st. That this meeting regards the approaching Marriage of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales as an important national event, and deems it desirable that measures should be taken to afford the inhabitants of Petersfield and Sheet, an opportunity of gratifying their loyalty on that auspicious occasion.
2nd. That in order to carry out the foregoing resolution a committee be appointed to make arrangements for giving a public dinner to the working classes of Petersfield and Sheet, and tea and buns to the children.
3rd. That the following gentlemen do form the said committee, Revs. Smelt and Haigh, Messrs. Cross, Small, Summers, Adams, Duplock, Harffey, J. Todman, Crafts, A. Gammon, Fairburn and Elkington.
A subscription was then entered into and the sum of £41 0s. 6d. was collected, and it was then arranged to divide the town, and the adjoining tything of Sheet, into districts, and part of the committee were appointed for house to house collection in furtherance of the fund. It was also resolved that this (Saturday) evening, at seven o’clock a public meeting should be held in the Town Hall, when the amount of collections could be stated, and the arrangements of celebration decided upon.
It is in contemplation to have booths in the square, provided the fund is sufficient to carry it out, the same as took place at the time of the coronation of our beloved Queen, and which we have little doubt of being accomplished.
