BIBLE SOCIETY.—The annual meeting of the auxiliary to the British and Foreign Bible Society was held at the Town Hall, on Thursday evening last. Allen Chandler, Esq., in the chair. From the report it appears that the finances are in a more prosperous state than they were last year. The first resolution was moved by H. Appleton, Esq., and seconded by the Rev. Mr. Smelt, of Petersfield. The latter gentleman regretted that a work should have been lately written tending to undermine the foundation of our faith, and such meetings were good as they brought together friends to unite in our common object—the circulation of the scriptures, and it afforded him great pleasure in being present. In supporting the resolution the Rev. T. Davis, of Godalming, said that he did not fear the Bishop of Natal’s book. The Bible has stood many fiercer attacks than that. In by-gone days it had been more fiercely assailed, but it still exists. The Rev. P. Kent, the deputation, gave a detail of the Society’s operations at home and abroad. The second resolution was seconded by the Rev. H. Marriott, of Fernhurst. He feared that Colenso’s book would be read by some who would wish it to be true, and then they would become confirmed in their scepticism. He urged upon the young to make the Bible their guide through life. Collection at the close, £2 17s. A delightful feeling pervaded the meeting, and thus proving that Christians of the various sections of the church can meet together for the furtherance of one common object.
