BOROUGH OF PETERSFIELD. 

     AT a GENERAL MEETING of the RATE PAYERS of the BOROUGH of PETERSFIELD and the adjoining Parishes, in the County of Southampton, held at the Town Hall, Petersfield, on Thursday, February 10th, 1842, for the purpose of enquiring into the PROPRIETY of CONTINUING the POLICE FORCE of this Division of the  County. 

Mr. JOHN EVANS, Chairman. 

It was Resolved,—Moved by Mr. HARFFY, and seconded by Mr. BREWER, 

     "That it is the opinion of this Meeting, that the RURAL POLICE FORCE has failed in realizing the expectations for which it was organised; 1st—By there being no protection whatever to property; 2nd—That they do not preserve the peace; 3rd—That by their unwarrantable overbearing conduct, they have created the disgust and contempt of the whole neighbourhood." 

It was further Resolved,—Moved by Mr. PUTNAM and seconded by Mr. HOAR, 

     "That it is the opinion of this Meeting, a Petition be embodied, and presented to the Worshipful, the Magistrates, at the next General Quarter Sessions, praying that the present Constabulary Force for this Division of the County be disbanded, they being found inadequate to the intentions for which they were organised." 

It was further resolved,—Moved by Mr. MEERES and seconded by Mr. BLACKMORE,  

     "That the Rev. R. Wright be requested to present the Petition," 

It was further Resolved,—Moved by Mr. MONK and seconded by Mr. ETHERINGTON,

     "That a Committee of Ten Gentlemen be appointed (with power to add to their number), for the purpose of carrying into effect, and ensuring the success of the Petition," 

It was further Resolved,—Moved by Mr. GOLDRING  and seconded by Mr. JONNING, 

     "That the Resolutions of this Meeting, be published in the County Papers, the Hampshire Telegraph, and Hampshire Chronicle." 

It is further Resolved,—Moved by Mr. G. TODMAN and seconded by Mr. R. HOAR, 

     "That the thanks of this Meeting be given to the Chairman, for the very able and efficient manner, in which he has presided over this Meeting and its proceedings." Carried without a dissentient voice.
